Two year olds should be started slowly and relaxed, yet emphasizing
manners at all times. Riding out side is a must for these young horses
to find balance of a new weight on their backs. Allow time for the young
horse to just walk out looking at everything and packing it's head in
a natural position, yet still able to guide their directions with out
resistance.
Once I get back to the training track I may ask for a little bit
of collection in the face and poll. I will still use my round pen weekly,
working on bitting- up the colt, wanting to accomplish 'give' early
on-- but not expecting it at all times until the colt is realizing this
is second nature and an everyday position--not just high
pressure.
This process starts slowly from day one and is a basic concept to
always come back to.
